PAGADIAN
CITY: Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Adelaida R.
Borja is promoting the development and management of the remaining mangrove and
beach forests in the province.
Borja’s
move came after she visited the coastal towns of Tukuran, Labangan, Dinas and
this city and saw the importance of developing its sea frontier within the coastal
communities.
She
said that rehabilitation of the sea frontier is one tread towards climate
change adaptation and will help mitigate storm surges during typhoons as well
as induce spawning grounds for fishes and other marine resources.
At
the same time, it will also develop into eco-tourism, which can generate
revenue for the local government, she added.
The
DENR officer has told her CENROs to coordinate with the mayors of the LGUs they
visited to determine the viable areas for mangrove and forest beach development
at the same time conduct initial assessment on idle fishponds and abandoned areas
for mangrove reversion.
The
DENR has said that beach forest trees are tolerant to low nutrients, low water
supply, strong winds and other harsh environmental conditions.
Further,
Borja said LGU support for other vital DENR projects is truly beneficial for
them as she cited, for example, the National Greening Program.
